Special Interview with Anthony Wilson a.k.a. The Secret Walrus

This week we continue our series of Special Interviews starting with a very talented model builder from New Zealand. This weeks guest of honor is Anthony Wilson a.k.a. The Secret WalrusHe is known for his colorful and amazingly detailed dioramas and extraordinary shaped figures and vehicle. Photos from the work of our guest will be presented between the questions but you should check the builders Flickr photo-stream for tons of amazing creations.

Kaplan: We already know you are one of the best LEGO MOC'ers in the world. What can you tell us about yourself other than that? Is Anthony Wilson your real name? We are also curious where does the nick “The Secret Walrus” come from?

Anthony: I’m very flattered that you think I’m one of the best MOC’sts out there. Anthony Wilson is indeed my name. I’m Australian but I’ve lived in New Zealand for most of my life. I’m 21 years old and a computer science student with 2 years left on my degree. I don’t have many hobbies other than LEGO at the moment. I try to write/compose some music as a secondary hobby but it’s not much at the moment and I don’t really share it with anyone right now. I don’t exactly remember where my nickname ‘The Secret Walrus’ came from but I’m pretty sure the Beatles song “I am the Walrus” had something to do with it.

K:  Do you remember the day when you got your first LEGO set? Which set was it? And How old were you when you started playing with LEGO bricks?

A: Aside from Duplo I’m pretty sure my first LEGO set was the original Hogwarts Express. I must’ve been 3 or 4 when I got it which seems like an awfully young age to get a set like that but I built it regardless. I still have the parts from it in my collection to this day.

Leave me alone Don't leave me alone, a sculpture by David Hughes

Brick artist David Hughes a.k.a. daveh_design shared his latest brick-sculpture named "Leave me alone Don't leave me alone" in his flickr.com photo-stream. According to the description this creation was built using 5,000 standard bricks and not plate or any other type of pieces. Catching the perfect shape without using detail pieces is really hard and the builder managed to build this awesome shape as his previous creations. This is not the first time David was blogged here. Check out the "Afternoon of a Faun", another amazing creation of the artist.

Afternoon of a Faun, a LEGO Sculpture by David Hughes

Brick-artist David Hughes a.k.a. daveh_design who is known for his great brick-built sculptures and mosaics recently shared this awesome sculpture based on the ballet "Afternoon of a Faun". The sculptures of David really amazing because the sculptures are built only using basic brick pieces and still looks great even at this scale.

LegoStyle Swimmer by Dirk VH

LEGO Artist and flickr.com user Dirk VH a.k.a. dm_meister who is known for incredible and huge LEGO sculptures like Super Mario Characters shared this swimmer sculpture recently in his photo-stream. According to the description this model was inspired by the summer Olympics in Rio 2016 and contains around 1000 bricks and plates. This model is very unique in my opinion because the main section of the structure was built at an 45 degrees angle which makes it look realistic and alive. Making the water with 2x1 plate pieces was maybe not be the best choice but it does the job.

Transforming Brick Robot

We have seen transforming robots built with LEGO bricks by talented builders before but is one is extra cute. LEGO fan and sci-fi masterbuilder Moko a.k.a. LEGO DOU Moko shared this amazing robot that can transform into a brick in his photo-stream. Besides its unique transform ability the look of this thing is still incredible. I loved how the face of the robot is shaped using a simple hand and new half-round tile piece.

Leisure Suit Larry Is Back in Form of Bricks!

LEGO Fan Letranger Absurde a.k.a.vitreolum shared this nice vignette in his flickr photostream. The scene is from the Leisure Suit Larry which is an adult-themed video game series created by Al Lowe. The creators unique building style makes his creations impressive. Printed tile eyes fit his figures very nicely and makes them unique. I also like how the heads and hair sections are built. Check out the creators photo-stream for more great figures "Micheal Jackson" and "First Snow" are my favorite ones.
