Special Interview with Anthony Wilson a.k.a. The Secret Walrus

This week we continue our series of Special Interviews starting with a very talented model builder from New Zealand. This weeks guest of honor is Anthony Wilson a.k.a. The Secret WalrusHe is known for his colorful and amazingly detailed dioramas and extraordinary shaped figures and vehicle. Photos from the work of our guest will be presented between the questions but you should check the builders Flickr photo-stream for tons of amazing creations.

Kaplan: We already know you are one of the best LEGO MOC'ers in the world. What can you tell us about yourself other than that? Is Anthony Wilson your real name? We are also curious where does the nick “The Secret Walrus” come from?

Anthony: I’m very flattered that you think I’m one of the best MOC’sts out there. Anthony Wilson is indeed my name. I’m Australian but I’ve lived in New Zealand for most of my life. I’m 21 years old and a computer science student with 2 years left on my degree. I don’t have many hobbies other than LEGO at the moment. I try to write/compose some music as a secondary hobby but it’s not much at the moment and I don’t really share it with anyone right now. I don’t exactly remember where my nickname ‘The Secret Walrus’ came from but I’m pretty sure the Beatles song “I am the Walrus” had something to do with it.

K:  Do you remember the day when you got your first LEGO set? Which set was it? And How old were you when you started playing with LEGO bricks?

A: Aside from Duplo I’m pretty sure my first LEGO set was the original Hogwarts Express. I must’ve been 3 or 4 when I got it which seems like an awfully young age to get a set like that but I built it regardless. I still have the parts from it in my collection to this day.

Special Interview with Eero Okkonen a.k.a. Pate-keetongu

This weeks guest of honor is Eero Okkonen a.k.a. Pate-keetongu from Finland. He is well known for his amazing large figures and steampunk creations. He also shared many impressive purist custom mini-figures as well. Photos from the work of our guest will be presented between the questions.

Kaplan: We already know you are one of the best LEGO MOC'ers in the world. What can you tell us about yourself other than that. What is your real name? What is your dayjob? Do you have any other hobbies or activities?

Eero: I am Eero Okkonen. I write about my LEGO hobby on my blog Cyclopic Bricks. I’m from Joensuu, Eastern Finland, and I’m currently studying architecture on Tampere University of Technology (TUT). It’s my first year there, and it’s very interesting. I’m planning to graduate as an architect in 2021. My other hobbies include art in general (drawing, oil and watercolour, general tinkering – though my studies include most of them), music (I can’t play anything, but I listen to lot of it and buy records regularly), board games, reading, cycling, hiking… And naturally hanging with friends doing nothing particularly but doesn’t everybody do that.

K: Do you remember the day when you got your first LEGO set? Which set was it? And How old were you when you started playing with LEGO bricks?

E: No. I played with DUPLO before actual bricks (or pikku-leegot as they are called in Finland, sometimes), and I had plenty of my father’s old bricks from 70’s. But I remember some of my earliest set and these include quite good-looking 6335 Indy Transport (which was released only a year after I was born) and not-so-good 6474 4-wheeled front shovel. I’ve been around 4 or 5 years old back then.

K: Do you remember the day when you got your first LEGO set? Which set was it? And How old were you when you started playing with LEGO bricks?

A: I think I was around 4 or 5 years old I received two sets at Christmas time, 6522 - Highway Patrol and 6506 - Precinct Cruiser. They were given by a friend of my mother and I apparently loved them so much my own parents followed up with more classic town sets in the years to come.

J: I don’t know, how old I was, but I think it was a holiday day and my sister and I where bored, so my mother took us to the local toyshop and bought the first

Sorry for the long wait bu here we are with another interview. Talented creator, SungWan Kim from South Korea is this weeks guest of honor. You know him and his team with the username OliveSeon from flickr.com. He and his team were known for huge dioramas built using both official LEGO sets and incredible MOC's. Photos from the work of our guest will be presented between the questions.

Kaplan: Hello. With your amazing and huge dioramas you are one of the best LEGO MOC'ers in the world in our opinion. What can you tell us about yourself and your friends other than that.

SungWan Kim: Hello, my name is SungWan Kim from South Korea and I am 42 years old. :-) Honestly, I don't think we are one of the best LEGO MOC'ersThere are many awesome creators than us in the world. I guess the strong point of our works is that our MOCs are in harmony with other lego official sets in a diorama.

I have organized the team named as OliveSeon (or hobbyinside) with two good creators for our creation works in 2008. All my fellows are members of brickinside LUG which I have founded by myself. With their helps, it seems like the quality of our MOCs is maintained above average.

K: Do you remember the day when you got your first LEGO set? Which set was it? And How old were you when you started playing with LEGO bricks?

S: Yes, of course. It was lego technic 8448. I used to play with lego sets owned by my friend at his house in my childhood. Actually what I have firstly owned is a technic 8448, when I was 26 years old.

But that’s something we don’t have here, unfortunately.

K: Do you remember your first day when you get your first LEGO set?

M: I think I got my first sets when I was around three, so I don't recall my very first one. However, I do remember the first large set I got. It was the 6271, Imperial Flagship. Which I was, of course, very happy with, and it is one of the best Lego ships ever made. So were all the ships that were made during those years.

K: Do you remember the day when you got your first LEGO set? Which set was it? And How old were you when you started playing with LEGO bricks?

P: I don't really remember everything that clearly, because it is a lot of years ago, may have been when I was four years old. Maybe I have played with my father's collection before I got my first set. But thinking about the sets I received first, it must have been 6672 Safari Off-Roader or 6671 Utility Repair Vehicle. The printed parts of both sets were my favorites at that time.

Special Interview with Nick Trotta a.k.a. tardisblue

And traveling! My wife and I have been fortunate to explore many delightful places worldwide. While on the road, I particularly love visiting talented LEGO geeks in their home base, exploring their Legoratories, and experiencing their culture. AFOL's are so welcoming!

Special Interview with Thorsten Bonsch a.k.a Xenomurphy

Hello LEGO enthusiasts. We are starting the week with a exciting interview. This week's guest of honor is a builder from Germany, Thorsten Bonsch a.k.a Xenomurphy who is known for his great action scene MOC's and the amazing Arkham Asylum MOC. Photos from the work of our guest will be presented between the questions.

Kaplan: We already know that you are an AFOL. What can you tell us about yourself other than that? What is your day job? Do you have any other hobbies or activities?

Thorsten Bonsch: I earn my living as a media designer, which is a fancy word for advertising artist, which is also a fancy word, now that I think about it.
Anyway, I adore anything that is creative or allows me to be creative, so my hobbies include drawing, painting, making movies, writing, the use of 3D software, moulding, computer games, board games, books, movies, music (though I’m completely unmusical), TV series, audio books and comics.

K: Do you remember the day when you got your first LEGO set? Which set was it? And how old were you when you started playing with LEGO bricks?

T: I’m not sure if it was the first set, but I remember some of my first sets, the yellow Classic Castle (Set #375) and  the classic Space Scooter (Set #885). I was very proud of the Space Scooter and when I wanted to show it to my friend and brag about it, I realised that he already had the much bigger classic Space Transport (Set #918). What a sad day – hahaha, no, not really. We loved to play with LEGO together. Nevertheless, I started playing with LEGO in general years before, with my older brother’s LEGO collection. There might have been sets included, but all the instructions and boxes were missing and he kept his bricks in an old kitchen drawer.

Special Interview with Pawel Michalak a.k.a Kris Kelvin

We are excited to share our second special interview. Our second guest of honor is an amazing builder from LUGPol and one of the best historical MOC builders in the world, Pawel Michalak a.k.a Kris Kelvin. Photos from the work of our guest will be presented between the questions.

Kaplan: We already know you are one of the best LEGO MOC'ers in the world. What can you tell us about yourself other than that. Real name? What is your dayjob? Do you have any other hobbies or activities? :)

Pawel Michalak: Well, first of all it`s really funny and weird to think of myself as one of the best MOC`ers in the world. But feel free to call me that :D My name is Pawel Michalak. I`m 40 years old AFOL from Poland. I live in Warsaw (capital city of Poland). I work as a clerk. Plus wife, two kids and two cats. Wife is OK for an AFOL, but kids are real monsters – steal bricks, lose bricks. You`ve been warned!!! I don`t think that there are any other hobbies in my life. I like to play tennis; going to the movies, but I don`t treat this as a hobby. The only real hobby is LEGO.

K: Do you remember the day when you got your first LEGO set? Which set was it? And How old were you when you started playing with LEGO bricks?

P: Yes I can remember this very well. My first set was 6651-Post Office Van. I was 8 or 9 years old when I started my Lego adventure. It was rather short lived. Then there was loooong „dark age”. I`ve returned to Lego about 9 years ago.

K: What is your best/unforgetable memory involving LEGO?

P: My cousin had a wonderful Kings Castle (6080), and I only had few small sets. My plan was to kill and rob him. Well, it didn`t work out.

K: If you have to choose, what is your all-time favorite LEGO set?

P: 10212 Imperial Shuttle. My friend dmac created his fantastic model, and another friend Adam Grabowski (LEGO designer) turned this beautiful MOC into fantastic set. It`s the only complex (complete?) model on my shelf. It`s gorgeous. And of course 10182 Cafe Corner. The rest of the sets remain far behind.

K:  What is/are your favorite LEGO theme/s

P: Let`s think. Castle, castle and castle. It`s a pity that this theme is slowly falling in oblivion. Nexo Knights? What the hell is that? Still Lego???

K: Did you have a "dark-age"? If you had one when did you return from your dark age and how?

P: As I mentioned above I did have a „dark age”. Quite a long one, about 20 years. It’s funny but I can`t remember why I returned on the light side of life. I remember vaguely – internet, Brickshelf, Classic Castle… And bum, I`m here.

K: How many LEGO bricks/sets do you own approximately?

P: It’s impossible to answer. I don`t buy sets, well sometimes modular building or castle set like 10193, but my Eden is located in Bricklink. Tens of thousands bricks in my house.

K: Your MOC's are awesome in general. What are your favorite top three of your MOCs?

P: It`s hard to tell. I love them all. If I don`t like what I`m building I won`t finish it, so all my completed MOC`s are my beloved children. But let`s try:

K: Do you scrap your MOC's after taking photos or displaying or do you keep them? How do you decide which ones you keep?

P: Most of my MOC's were scrapped. They were too big to keep in house. Besides, as soon as I finish something I immediately lose any interest in it. l It`s done. Some things are rented out for commercial exhibitions, so they are still alive. When they return, they will be scrapped without mercy.

K: Do you use custom or third party pieces in your MOC's?

P: Yes. Sometimes I use custom weapons or headgear from Brickarms or Brickforge. Especially weapons from world war II era. They are very well done.

K: What is more important for you in MOC-building, realism or creativity?

P: I always try to build something realistic, and almost always something comes out wrongly. :D
I like creativity in this hobby, but I don`t like to use some strange techniques like roof made from skis. Bricks for walls, slopes for roof, plates for landscape. That`s my motto :)

K: If you choose best three LEGO elements that you think are extremely useful for building MOC's which element you pick.

P: Simple question at last :)Plate 1x2, cheese slope and baseplate. And that`s all folks.

K: Do you have any suggestions for the new MOC'ers?

P: Just build. There isn`t any other way. It`s hard to begin when you look on all these beautiful MOC`s on Brickshelf or Flickr. You can always think of yourself - I can`t do this, I won`t even try. It`s just hobby. Try it :)

K: Are you currently working on some MOC's or other LEGO related projects?

P: Yes. I`m trying to build a Mars base. Habitat and vehicles in white, and landscape in dark red , dark orange and medium dark flesh. Beautiful colour combination for me :)
By the way, dark red is my favourite colour of all times.

K: The ultimate question of our blog tiles or studs?

P: Well. It really depends. Hard to imagine ground landscape without studs, but on the other hand I don`t like (for example) big car models with studs all over it. I don`t build big car models so my answer is studs :)

We thank our guest of honor very much for his participation.
Stand by for more interviews with the best builders of the world.
